The 9-point checklist
- Hinge quality: positive-locking latches, zero play — the safety-critical part
- Folded dimensions: measured against YOUR storage space
- Weight: can you actually lift it where it needs to go?
- Folded retention: stays folded in the trunk (magnets/straps)
- Unfolded rigidity: no flex or creaking when riding
- Wheel size: 20" is standard; smaller is twitchier
- Battery: 400Wh+ for real utility; removable for indoor charging
- Carry handle or wheels: for rolling it folded through stations
- Brand support: hinges need parts eventually
How to test ride an e-bike
Ten focused minutes beats an hour of aimless cruising. Run through this checklist:
- Motor engagement: does assist kick in smoothly or lurch? Try the lowest and highest assist levels.
- Braking: stop hard from ~15 mph. Heavier e-bikes need real stopping power — this is where hydraulic discs shine.
- Fit: can you reach the ground comfortably at stops? Any knee or back strain after a few minutes?
- Noise: some gear whir is normal; grinding or clicking is not.
- Weight: lift it (you'll do this onto car racks and up steps). Walk it. Feel the heft honestly.
- Controls: is the display readable in sunlight? Are the buttons usable with gloves?

How long does it take to fold an e-bike?
30–60 seconds once practiced. If it takes longer, the mechanism is either complex or cheap — neither is good.
