E-Bike Size Guide

The most important spec isn't on the spec sheet — it's fit.

A perfectly specced bike in the wrong size is a miserable bike. E-bikes amplify fit mistakes with their weight. Here's how to get it right.

Getting the right size

E-bike sizing follows standard bike sizing, but the stakes are slightly higher because the bike is heavier — a poor fit is harder to muscle around. Start with the manufacturer's size chart (height and inseam), then sanity-check standover height: you want 1–2 inches of clearance between you and the top tube on a step-over, and easy flat-footed stops on a step-through.

Between sizes? Size down for maneuverability and easier handling (better for city riding); size up for a more stretched, stable feel at speed. If possible, test ride — ten minutes in a parking lot reveals fit problems no chart can. And remember saddles, stems, and handlebars are adjustable; frame size is not.

General guidance (always check the manufacturer's chart):

Step-through vs step-over frames

Step-through frames (low or missing top tube) let you mount by stepping forward rather than swinging a leg over. Easier for shorter riders, anyone with limited hip mobility, frequent stop-and-go city riding, and riding in skirts or work clothes. The old knock — that they're flexy — is largely gone on modern e-bikes with reinforced tubing.

Step-over (diamond) frames are marginally stiffer and lighter, and they dominate mountain and performance e-bikes where frame rigidity matters. For commuting and comfort riding, choose based on convenience: if you'll be hopping on and off at lights and racks all day, step-through wins on daily livability.

Frequently asked questions

What if I'm between sizes?

Size down for agility, up for stability. Test ride both if possible.

Does e-bike sizing differ from regular bikes?

The principles are identical, but the consequences of poor fit are worse — 60 lbs is harder to wrestle than 25.
