Winter storage is mostly about one thing: the battery. Get that right and the rest is easy. Here's the full procedure.
Storing your e-bike for winter
- Bring the battery indoors. This is the whole game — freezing temperatures damage cells and slash capacity. Store at 40–60% charge, not full, not empty.
- Clean the bike, dry it thoroughly, and apply fresh chain lube.
- Inflate tires to max sidewall pressure (they'll lose air over months).
- Hang it or get the weight off the tires if possible; at minimum, rotate the wheels monthly to avoid flat spots.
- Check the battery charge monthly and top back up to ~50% if it's drifted down.
- Cover it to keep dust off, but let it breathe — sealed plastic traps moisture.
Come spring: full charge, check tire pressure, test the brakes, lube the chain, and check every bolt. Five minutes of recommissioning beats a season of creaks.
Frequently asked questions
Can I store my e-bike in an unheated garage?
The bike, yes. The battery, no — bring it indoors. Freezing temperatures damage cells and permanently reduce capacity.
Should the battery be full or empty for storage?
Neither — 40–60%. Full accelerates degradation; empty risks deep discharge over months.
