Skipping gears? Hesitant shifts? It's almost always cable stretch or a bent hanger — both easy fixes. Here's the process.
Tuning e-bike gears
E-bike derailleurs go out of adjustment like any bike's — cable stretch in the first months, then gradual drift. Symptoms: hesitant shifts, chain skipping, noise in certain gears.
- Barrel adjuster first: shift to the problem gear, then turn the barrel adjuster at the shifter half-turn at a time until shifts are crisp. Counter-clockwise (viewed from behind) usually tightens the cable.
- Limit screws only if the chain drops off the cassette entirely — mark their position before touching them.
- On mid-drives: ease pedal pressure when shifting. Shifting under full motor torque bends the rules that derailleurs were designed for.
- A bent derailleur hanger (from a tip-over) causes endless shifting misery — it's a $15 part and the first thing to check after any fall.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my e-bike skip under power?
Shifting under full motor load stresses the drivetrain — ease off momentarily when shifting. Persistent skipping means worn chain/cassette or adjustment needed.
