Long commutes are where e-bikes shine brightest — and where battery math matters most. For 30+ mile days, you want 600Wh minimum, efficient assist, and ideally a charging plan. Here's how to spec for distance.

What battery watt-hours (Wh) actually mean

Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh) — volts × amp-hours. Think of it as the size of the fuel tank. Most e-bikes ship with 400–750Wh batteries. As a rough guide, expect 20–40 miles of real-world range from ~500Wh with moderate assist, though your weight, terrain, tire choice, and assist level swing that number dramatically.

Two practical notes: first, manufacturers' range claims are best-case figures (light rider, flat ground, lowest assist) — plan on 60–70% of the claimed number for everyday riding. Second, bigger isn't always better. A 750Wh battery adds several pounds; if your commute is 8 miles round trip, a lighter 400–500Wh pack you'll actually carry upstairs beats a heavy long-range one.

Real-world range vs claimed range

Treat manufacturer range figures as optimistic. They're typically measured with a light rider, on flat ground, in the lowest assist mode, with no headwind. For planning purposes, assume 60–70% of the claimed range in normal riding.

What drains a battery fastest: high assist levels, hills, headwinds, heavy loads, under-inflated or knobby tires, and lots of stop-and-start riding. What extends it: steady pedaling in a moderate gear, eco/low assist on flats, keeping tires at proper pressure, and smooth starts. If range anxiety is your thing, the honest fix is a bigger battery (600Wh+) or a bike with an optional range-extender pack — not a bigger motor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a second battery later?

Only if the bike supports it — dual-battery systems need matching mounts and electronics. Some brands sell range-extender packs; most don't. Buy the range you need upfront.

Does cold weather affect range?

Yes — expect 20–30% less range below freezing. Store and charge the battery indoors, and it will warm up as you ride.
