Essential Commuter E-Bike Accessories

Bikes don't commute — systems commute. The accessories turn a fun e-bike into a reliable daily vehicle. Buy these in roughly this order.

Starter accessories worth buying on day one

• Helmet — certified (CPSC/CE); consider MIPS and e-bike-rated models for faster Class 3 riding.
• Lock(s) — at minimum a quality U-lock; in cities, pair it with a chain or cable for the wheels.
• Lights — even if your bike has integrated lights, a bright rechargeable front light is cheap insurance.
• Floor pump with gauge — proper tire pressure is free range and flat prevention.
• Multitool, tire levers, spare tube, mini pump or CO2 — the flat kit. Practice using it at home once.
• Rack and panniers or a good backpack — decide based on your commute.

The commuter accessory priority list

1. Lock(s) — before the first ride to work
2. Lights — rear blinky at minimum, always
3. Fenders — unless your bike includes them
4. Rack + panniers — your back will thank you
5. Floor pump — weekly pressure checks are free range
6. Flat kit — levers, tube, mini-pump; practice once at home
7. Mirror — bar-end or helmet; traffic awareness is safety

E-bike lights: seeing and being seen

Many e-bikes include integrated lights wired to the main battery — convenient and always charged. If yours doesn't, or you want more:

• Front: 500+ lumens for unlit roads, 200–400 for lit streets. A shaped beam (like German StVZO lights) puts light on the road instead of into drivers' eyes.
• Rear: bright red with a flash mode. This is the light that saves your life in traffic — don't skimp.
• Mount solidly. Handlebar mounts vibrate; a light that points at the sky after every pothole is useless.
• USB-rechargeable is the standard; carry a small backup for long rides.
• Daytime running lights measurably improve driver awareness — run the rear blinky even at noon.
